With the growing amount of English speakers in Valencia there is obviously an increasing demand for English speaking therapists in Valencia, but how to find a therapist that meets your needs as an English speaker?

It depends on your needs, is your Spanish sufficient to see a Spanish speaking therapist? Or do you feel more comfortable with an English speaking therapist without having to worry about things getting lost in translation? Having an English speaking therapist allows you to express yourself freely in your own language. Besides language barriers, there could also be the matter of cultural differences. Spanish culture differs from English speaking cultures. Thinking about the different pace of life, things such as family matters and the importance of close family connections, attitudes towards time and punctuality and beliefs around work and career. In a therapeutic relationship these cultural differences can sometimes lead to confusion or misunderstandings. But how to find an English speaking therapist in Valencia?

Access to English Speaking Therapy Services in Valencia

First of all, you will need to decide whether you want to go through the public system or the private system. Saying that, in the public system the chance of finding an English speaking therapist is not easy and access is very limited. However, if you have a centre de salud you can ask if they have any English speaking psychology services available.

If you have a private cover for example with Sanitas, Adeslas or Mapfre (or another insurance company) you can check on their website which services are available in your area and you’ll need to check your insurance cover which services are covered, depending on your level of coverage. There are English speaking therapists available, most of them will be from Spain and have trained in Spain in order for them to become registered in Spain and therefor acquire a contract with an insurance company. They are often part of a bigger health care service. If this suits your needs, then this would be a great option for you without having to search for a perfect fit.

In case you are happy to pay out of pocket and you are looking for a specific type of therapist, or a good personality fit, you can search online and choose an English speaking therapist of your liking. Most English speaking therapists who are trained outside of Spain will work as an independent private provider. This is mainly because we have often done our training outside of Spain, for example in the United Kingdom, the United States or Australia and it’s very challenging to transfer these degrees and certifications. It often means that we hold our registrations in another country, outside Spain. Fees will vary and expect to pay between 60€ and 100€ per session. Make sure to always check if the English speaking therapist of your liking has credentials, registrations or certificates that align with the type of therapy you are looking for.
